Report to 9th October

The extreme weather, ranging from very bright and hot to very wet and windy has kept the angling exciting down at Witton Castle Lakes, and although challenging at times, rods have been having exceptional sport on lures with anglers having a good week of braces.
First up was Darlington rod Mr A.J Binn whose nice brace of rainbows totalled 23lb(best 14lb) on diawlbach while Durham angler Jason Sharp took 2 very nice fish of 12lb and 8lb on olive zonker. Penrith's Davie Cowan managed yet another fine brace this time 11lb and 8lb in a bag of 14 on cats whisker while Newton Aycliffes Tony Jessop managed a nice tiger trout of 2 1/2lb on CDC. Another fine fish of note was an 8lb blue trout that fell to Mr Ian Watson of Hexham on a black hopper.
Unluckiest angler this week was a Mr Challis who hooked a HUGE fish that run all the way across the West lake, unfortunately Mr Challis did not have enough line on his reel to hold the monster and they parted company.

Report to 4th September

Cooler water has really brought Witton Castle Lakes right back to top form. Dry flies fishing well have included Black and olive CDC, daddy-long-legs and hoppers while all manner of lures have also taken good fish. Top sub surface patterns have been hare's ear, black mosaic buzzer and pheasant tails. Northumberlands Mr M Walker had a day to remember returning 18 nice rainbows including one at 12 1/2lb. Darlingtons James Roberts wasn't too far behind returning 16 with one to 11lb. Well done to Weardale rod Mathew Birney who broke his duck by releasing 4 good rainbows best to 4lb on his own invention, the bidet buzzer! Witton Castle Lakes welcomed the recent crop of young North East angling talent to the lakes with a 4 hour session for the Talent Pathway. The practice session went well with Bishop Aucklands Brad Maddison returning 6, with a fish to 7lb, this was equalled by Witton Park rod Adam Nelson while big fish hunter Thomas McKimm stole the show with a fish of 10 1/2lb. I'm sure you'll all wish the youngsters well as they gear up for a challenge match against the North West region later this month, and on this form they will take some stopping.

The angling has been explosive at times this week down at Witton Castle Lakes. While some found it tricky at times, those with the right tactics were having a field day.Small black and olive buzzers was the order of the week(down to size 22)and the anglers who fished them slowly just under the surface had the best results. Meadowfield Pair Bernie McKewon and John Bean had a good day returning 13 between them including a 10 1/2lb rainbow for John and a lovely Gold trout of 4 1/2 lb for Bernie. Report for 7th-13th March

We are proud to announce that we have now introduced Tiger trout ( a cross between brown trout and brook trout)to the lakes along with a healthy number of Blue trout down at Witton Castle. The angling continues to impress at the lakes with big bags and big fish all round.Again, black and green lures fished on sunk or intermediate lines are the order of the day but in the warmer parts of the day a small hare's ear twitched along just sub surface has been getting good results. Willington's Terry Ross took the best bag this week with a nice haul of 19 fish that included 7 blue trout,While Ashington's Mr D Parker wasn't far behind with 17. Report for 4th-6th March

The new season started with a bang down at Witton Castle Lakes with an excellent turn out and excellent angling to match. Anglers were met with perfect overcast conditions with a nice ripple on the lakes and they certainly made the most of it with each rod averaging just over 10 fish each for the day. Black lures twitched along on a slow figure of eight pattern proved to be the best tactic with Black zonker,Black damsel,Black fritz,Bloodworm and Cats whisker all featuring heavily in the catch returns.Best bag of the day went to Cockfields Ryan Mathews who returned 22,while Bishop Auckland pals Paul King and Michael Turner returned 17 and 15 respectively with Witton regular Alan Ross totalling 15 which included a fine fish of 10lb. Witton Castle Lakes is now fully open all through the week and at the time of writing big fish and big bags are still being recorded(more about that next week) Tight lines for the season

Report for weekend 25th-27th February

The fishing proved difficult this weekend down at Witton Castle Lakes. The fish were well down on the bottom and those rods that did have some success were all on sinking/intermediate lines and lures pulled very slowly. The top fish went to Bishop Auckland's Mr G W Jones who showed his son and first time angler how to do it with a nice rainbow of around 7lb.There was also a fair sprinkling of 2lb and 3lb fish and once again the brown trout featured heavily. This week will see the introduction of over 1600 quality rainbow trout to the lakes in preparation for opening day on Saturday(5th March). They will range in size from 2lb-20lb+ and some great rod returns are predicted in the coming weeks.A further stocking of top quality Blue trout in the next fortnight followed by the introduction of hybrid Tiger trout(a 1st for Witton Castle Lakes)will ensure that exciting times lay ahead. Good luck for the new season

Report for weekend 18th-20th February

The lakes continued to fish well through the weekend despite Saturday and Sunday being bitterly cold. Again the usual suspects of lures, cats whisker, dawsons olive and zonkers fished on an intermediate or slow sinking line accounting for the better bags. Barnard Castle rod Jim Mcdade took the best bag of the weekend returning 9 with the best fish a brownie of around 8lb,not far behind was visiting angler Vladimir Szymanski who returned 8 on a variety of methods with a weighted nymph accounting for most of his fish. There are a few signs of spring around the fishery now so hopefully warmer days are not far off. There are still limited spaces available for opening day (Saturday 5th March) please phone and book to avoid disappointment. As from Monday 7th March the fishery will be open 7 days a week again. Tight lines

Report for weekend 4th-6th Feb

It's been a tough weekend down at Witton Castle Lakes due to the driving rain and damaging gales, however those brave enough to venture on to the water have fared pretty well and seen their courage well rewarded. Those fishing into the wind and timing their casting in between gusts have done best, with the fish taking only a few yards out. Durham rod Martin Smith bagged the biggest fish of the weekend, casting into the teeth of the gale with a sinking line and black and green Montana nymph. This superb rainbow was estimated at 14lb plus before being returned to the West Lake. Evenwood angler and Witton regular Liam Hardy managed a very nice brown trout of around the 6lb by fishing along the bankside with a zonker. A huge fish has been spotted in the South lake in the bay closest to the angling lodge. This fish looks around 8 inches across its back as it kites around the shallows taking minnows. Most have had a cast at it and have moved on frustrated after a while. There is a fish of a lifetime there for either a lucky rod or a really good stalker.

Report for weekend 28th-30th Jan

We're not quite through the cold winter weather just yet and at times the margins of the lakes have been icing over, the angling at times can be testing but those who have the correct tactics have been getting some good results. The usual winter method of slowly twitching a lure deep in the lake has only provided the odd fish, while small diawl bach nymphs, spider patterns and buzzers fished a little higher up have given the best sport. Chopwell rod Alan Thompson started his season on a high returning a fine rainbow of around the 12lb mark which he later described as "perfect",a further 3 fish found his net the best of those was weighed in at 5 1/2 lb.Alan usual method is the diawl bach fished under an indicator. West Aucklands Mr G Robson took the best bag of the weekend returning 7 best of which was a fine 5lber again on the nymph. There are still some space available for opening day(Sat 5th March) when a big stock of tiger and blue trout will be introduced to the lakes.Bookings only call (01388)488691 Tight lines

Report for weekend 21st-23rd Jan

There is still some availability for opening day (5th March) please book on (01388)488691. Report for weekend 14th-16th Jan

Witton Castle Lakes reopened this weekend after an enforced 6 week closure due to the coldest December since 1911.The 1 foot thick ice sheet, that totally covered the lakes, finally broke on Sunday to the delight and relief of the Witton regulars. Catch returns were impressive mainly due to the trout not having seen an artificial fly for over a month. The fish were keen to chase almost anything that caught their eye with black and green zonker and cats whisker accounting for most of the fish. Cockfield rod Liam Hardy wet his net the most with a nice haul of 7 that included a nice brown trout(4lb) and a lovely fin perfect rainbow(5lb) while Bishop Auckland Club member John Marmsley taking the best fish of the day a nice rainbow of 6lb. The long range forecast doesn't look too bad and we hope to be open Friday,Saturday and Sunday from now until the beginning of March with the 2011 season starting proper on Saturday 5Th March. Tight Lines.

Report to 3rd January

Well the lakes are still under a foot of ice as they have been all through December. Moves will be made this week to help the thawing process along and we hope to be open by Sunday 9th January (or sooner if mother nature helps us out). Please be advised to phone the lakes prior to setting off and you'll be able to get the most up to date information.

Opening day for the 2011 season has been put back to Saturday 5th March due to horse racing taking place on the original date. A very Happy New Year from all at Witton Castle Lakes and tight lines for 2011.

Report to 28th November

The onslaught of winter snow and bitter North winds has put paid to the angling action towards the end of the week at Witton Castle Lakes. However, the start of the week fished well with Stockton angler Geoff Robertson managing 9 fish with the best being around the 8lb mark caught on a variety of lures and an intermediate line.Bishop Aucklands Tim Watson took the best fish this week, a splendid rainbow of 11lb 6oz on a wicked white fished under a bung.

Lure fishing continues to produce the best of the sport at the moment with Zonker,Dawson's olive and Humongous patterns doing the business while deep slowly fished buzzers have also produced during the calmer times in the day.
Please be advised that phoning the lakes prior to setting off would be a good idea while this cold snap persists.(01388)488691

Report to 22nd November

Another week of heavy squally showers and gale force winds mean that angling pressure has been light this week down down at Witton Castle lakes. However, sport remains good especially during the calmer times when fish have been showing on the top and falling for a small suspended hare's ear fished in the surface film. When the weather has been at it's worst, sinking lines and fry imitation lures have been the order of the day with the minkie still fishing extremely well.Best fish this week went to Westgate husband and wife team Tony and Jenny ward with a nice 7lb rainbow that was tricked by Tony's deep fished minkie. We are now taking bookings for opening day 2011 which will be Saturday 26th Feb and full tickets only,so be among the first to fish the newly redesigned lake. There will also be a new stocking policy at Witton for the 2011 season which will see more top quality rainbows than ever before and just to spice things up a bit we will be introducing Tiger trout,Brook trout and a good spread of hard fighting Blue trout. So be among the first to fish the redeveloped and upgraded Witton Castle Lakes. Report to 8th November

Witton Castle Lakes fished well this week despite the howling gales and lashing rain.Three fish of exceptional quality are fighting it out for the prestigious fish of the week award and I'm afraid I'll have to leave it to the reader to decide which one is best.First up is Bishop Auckland's Alan Ross who turned up at the fishery with his own minkie pattern,The fly was a full 3 inches long with the biggest eyes you have ever seen. After much mickey taking and rolling around laughing,Alan made sure he had the last laugh landing a beautiful fin perfect rainbow of 17lb.Mr G.R Oliver struggled a bit early on and hit a magical hour fishing along side the tree pool landing 5 fine fish including a brown trout estimated at 12lb+.Father and son team Mr S Forster and Blake Forster surprised everyone with another fine brownie of around the 8lb mark from the bait lake,The fish was duly returned to the West (fly only)Lake to be caught another day.
The Rookhope Inn enjoyed their day trip to the lakes with another father and son team hooking up on their 1st ever trip. The Sayerman's fish of 2lb may not be a record breaker but it will live long in the memory.
this week went to Spennymoor's Geoff Wharton who's impressive haul of 9 included a cracker of a double figure rainbow trout and a very nice brown trout of around 5lb,all on small hare's ear and pheasant tail patterns.Paul Sands left the fishery happy with a lovely quality and fin perfect 6lber,taken on a zonker.
The bait lake fished well with the youngsters making the most of the half term holiday.Bait rods averaging 4 fish each.
Work continues on the East lake and as water levels drop, more and more stock from  the East lake will be transferred over to the other 2 fly lakes.

Report to 31st October

Angling pressure has been light this week on the fly lakes down at Witton Castle Lakes but despite the lack of rods the catch returns have been encouraging.Best bag

Report to 25th October

Two anglers shared the biggest fish of the week award with Leadgate;s Norman Midgley returning a fine 10lber for the 2nd week running on a zonker and Frosterley's Paul Tweddle also releasing a nice 10lber along with a further 9 fish on a small hare's ear pattern.
At the time of writing, work has begun on major redesigning work at Witton Castle Lakes. The big East lake is in the process of getting drained and all the stock moved to the other 2 lakes which remain open and heavily stocked. The big lake will be deepened and islands introduced into the middle of the 2 big bays. There are a couple of reasons for this, firstly with the lakes being deeper this should make a huge impact on the summer weed blooms(reducing them as much as possible) and secondly the islands will take up a lot of space in the middle of the bays and push the fish into casting range. These improvements will be done with much thought with the aim being to improve the fishery and the fishing experience at Witton Castle Lakes. No one knows exactly how long this work will take place but if there is sufficient time before opening day 2011 then the proposed works will be carried out on the other 2 fly lakes also. There are big changes in the air down at Witton Castle Lakes and anglers will see a much improved fishery in the new year.Feel free to pop down (during opening times)to see the difference,I'm sure you will all be very pleased with the plans.

Report to 10th October

Plenty of big fish getting hooked down at Witton Castle Lakes this week with  Mr W.B Bradley safely returning a brute of a fish that was weighed in the net at 16lb.Lee Wilkinson got the best of the bag limits,His bag of 3 fish pulling the

It's been a mixed week in terms of flies with big lures working best in the mornings and again as dusk comes in.Small hare's ear CDC patterns have been accounting for a lot of fish in the afternoon as things warm up a bit and fish begin to show on the top.the surface film. The Diawl bach has been accounting for its fair share of fish again this week and the lure pullers are having a bit more success now that the trout are looking to fatten up a bit ready for the winter.
Fish of the week was a fine specimen of 16 1/2lb that fell to Richmond angler Mr S Cox.Mr Cox managed to trick his fish with a small red holo diawl bach fished just under the surface.John  Robinson of Barnard Castle took an equally good blue trout of 12lb on a pheasant tail variant while Newcastle rod Richard Waite was chuffed with his bag of 3 fish that tipped the scales at 9lb,6 1/2lb and 5lb mostly on daddies and buzzers.
Catch and release anglers have also fared well with Durhams S Robinson returning 14 and Bishop Auckland's Mr S Thow putting back 10. Meadowfields Bernie Mckewon(pulling lures despite a recent major operation) returning 9 and 7 in separate visits.Well done Bernie you've still got it.

Report to 26th September

As the martins and swallows get ready for their long trip south, the lakes have been looking great through the morning mist.As the Autumnal sun burns through, the trout have been rising to daddy long legs and small cdc patterns fished in

Report to 5th September

The fishing continues to improve down at Witton Castle Lakes now that there are lower daytime temperatures and some good winds to cool and re oxygenate the water. For the second week running there have been huge hatches of olives right through the day and little dry flies, twitched every now and then have been receiving some savage takes. Lure fishing has produced the bigger fish, while the small imitative patterns have produced the bigger bags. Wittons brown trout have also made an appearance this week, they’ve been getting hooked in good numbers with small dries.
Durham rod Mr A Maughawn took the biggest fish, a beauty of a rainbow at 13 1/2 lb that fell to his black zonker fished deep. While 14 year old Tow Law angler Leon Robinson wasn't far behind with another fine fish of 11 3/4lb on an orange fritz.
Mr J Bradley returned the best brown trout of the week, estimated at over the 5lb mark. Westgate angling couple Tony and Jenny Ward continued their good season taking their bag limit of 3 and returning a further 11 fish on a wide variety of flies.

Report to 29th August

The top of the water sport returned to Witton Castle Lakes this week with large hatches of big olives clouding over the lakes. Most productive method has been to fish a good size dry fly and just twitch it every now and then to put some life into the fly. Muddler minnow skating across the top and small sedge patterns also working well.
Middlesbourgh rod Mr S Hunter with the top fish this week, a cracking rainbow just under the 18lb mark from the West lake while Leadgate angler Joe Myers managed another nice fish of 14lb that was returned to the water after falling to his buzzer fished beneath a wake fly.
The Bait lake continues to throw up some surprises as proved by Darlington 13 year old Amy fisher, while only on her 2nd ever fishing day managed to catch a nice blue trout that pulled the scales to 3 1/2lb,She also landed a beauty of a rainbow that was estimated at around the 6lb mark and released the fish, unharmed into the fly lakes. Well done.

Report to 15th August

The lakes are fishing a bit better now that the summer sun has cooled, The recent rain has also helped to top the lakes back up. The fish have responded by going into a feeding frenzy especially early mornings and late afternoons.
Chopwell rod Hughie Martin took the best fish this week tipping the scales at 12lb on his own invention fly called “the green eyed marauder “after the envious glances from his friend. This was an extra special capture as Hughie wanted a good fish to present at his granddaughter's christening dinner. Well done.Mr S Ferguson visiting from Carlisle had a topper that fell just short of the 11lb mark on black buzzer while Durham's John Norcup managed to raise a beauty of a fish to his daddy long legs that turned the dial to 9 1/2lb.
Sporting anglers have also enjoyed good sport with Consett's Jim Anderson returning 17 mostly on shipmans buzzer and sugar cubes.
As you can see from this weeks report, the fish are feeding much higher up in the water now after being a bit lazy in the warm summer water temperatures, hopefully this trend will continue and we should be looking forward to some fine sport as the nights draw in.

Report to 9th August

The Sport at Witton Castle Lakes has really picked up this week with the lakes brim full again after the summer drought and a fresh stock of hard fighting trout added to the already well stocked lakes. The bait lake has been fishing its socks off now that the heavy work of making the lake is complete. Best times have been early morning and evening with the middle of the day fishing well when there is a healthy layer of cloud cover. Best flies have proved to be the Damsel nymph, Diawl Bach and that old Witton creation the Dawsons Olive.
The notable catches of the week were Mr Jim Muir of Carlisle who left the fishery with 2 fine fish,18lb rainbow and a cracking blue trout of 12lb that fell to his Damsel Nymph just twitched along under the wave. Newcastle rod George Watson had a fantastic day returning 17 on a Shipmans Buzzer and Diawl Bach combo.

Report to 24th July

Congratulations to Durham rod W Everitt who managed to pick up a tagged fish from the West lake. He left the fishery a happy man with a bottle of whiskey under his arm for his efforts.
On now to the unluckiest angler of the week.Bishop Aucklands Steve Allinson was delighted to double hook up on buzzers until the fish fought in opposite directions and snapped him in a flash. Steve returned a couple of days later sporting a brand new (and expensive) fly line to try his luck again. This time he hit into one of Wittons "big fish" estimated at easily 20+lb. The fish run off across the big East lake and worked poor Steve's reel right down to the backing before they parted company. When he reeled in the slack line he was horrified to find his new fly line completely missing. At the time of writing neither the fish nor the line have been seen again.

Report to 18th July

A great big thank you to everyone who donated towards the Witton Castle Lakes Help The Heroes campaign, the day went really well and funds were raised for a very worthwhile cause. Donations are still being taken at the lakes so i can't give a figure yet of how much was raised. A special thank you must also go to Mr Dave Hardwick and the board of Bishop Auckland and District Angling Club who did all the leg work to make sure that this fledgling idea really took off, together with our partners at Witton Castle Country Park whose sponsorship of the event was invaluable we hope you all had a great day. We really want this venture to grow year after year and become a regular event in the Witton calender. A big pat on the back to everyone who participated and organised a fine day for a fine cause.

The Witton Castle Country Park champion for 2010 is Mr Paul Tennick of Westgate, whose splendid performance landed him the trophy,a weeks holiday and some spending money. His north country spider patterns really working well. Mr M Watson won a cash prize for catching the 1st fish(timed at 10.15am) while the heaviest fish went to Mr M Docherty, tipping the scales at 4 1/2lb.Mr Docherty's fish was also tagged which meant he won the bonus of a £10 tackle voucher. One other tagged fish was caught by Crook's Andy Breen who walked away with a new fly box. There are still 2 tagged fish in the competition lake with a bottle of whiskey and a fly rod just waiting to be claimed.
The other notable catches outwith the competition was Stocktons A Grabham with 17 fish returned to the South lake (which has been fishing its socks off since it was turned over to fly only again). Durham rod A Taylor returned 5 but this included a beautiful specimen of 16 1/2lb while Peterlee's Mr Watkins took another fine fish of 10 3/4lb on black buzzer.

Report to 11th July

Now that the South Lake has returned to fly only, it continues to produce the goods with Durham rods J Bradley and A King returning 18 and 15 respectively without leaving the South lake. Meadowfields Bernie McKewon had a fantastic day returning 17(again on the South Lake),his day started on cats whisker and finished with CDC shuttlecocks. Meanwhile Bernie's long time fishing pal, Johnnie "no fish “Bean was over on the West lake having trouble landing 2 fish at the same time. It's the first time Johnnie has ever had a double hook up and he left the fishery delighted

Report to 5th July

The big news down at Witton Castle Lakes this week is the addition of a 4th lake.So that means that the bait fishing has now been moved on to the new lake and the South lake has become fly only again. This is bound to please many of the anglers who regard the South lake as one of our best.

Bishop Aucklands Alan Ross returned the best fish this week, estimated at 15 1/2lb on a damsel variant, while returning a further 6 in a great 4 hour session.Father and daughter team Paul and Sophie Coyle managed a lovely fish of 11lb ,fishing lures on an adult and junior ticket.Small dries have also come up trumps with Newcastle regular John Sharp returning a beauty of 14lb+ on a small black and white dry, which John has nicknamed "the magpie special".There has been a healthy smattering of fish in the 4-8lb range as the bigger fish start to come to the net again after the sweltering heat of the last few weeks.

This Friday(9th July) will see another all night session at the lakes(all details on our website).

Tagged fish kitty is now up to £120.

Top flies have included Hoppers,Daddies,PTN,CDC and buzzers in black and olive.

Report upto 6th June

Blistering hot weather and warm water temperature has made the afternoons difficult at Witton Castle Lakes. However, early mornings and evenings are coming into their own and continue to fish well with small diawl  bach patterns working best.

Newton Aycliffe's Ron Hutton was this weeks top rod, banking 13 rainbows and 4 cracking brownies while Crook's Brian Conway wasn't too far behind with 12, which included a brown trout estimated at 8lb.Most of these fish fell to diawl bachs fished very slowly.

The big fish are keeping their heads down at the moment but plenty of top quality rainbows in the 4-8lb range coming off the water. One or two Mayfly starting to show and although the fish haven't quite switched on to them yet, they will soon.

Remember the all night special on Saturday 19th June is coming up fast; this gives you the rare opportunity to fish the Lakes all through the night  so if you want to take up this opportunity ring the lakes on 01388 488691 and book your place.

Report upto 16th May

The sporting tickets have had the best of the action this week at Witton Castle Lakes with many anglers getting heavy bags. At the moment Large olives, Alder and Hawthorn fly are hatching in abundance means that the top of the water sport is at its best right now. Durham’s Stevie Freak's haul of 28 included 2 doubles that were fooled by his floating hare's ear, on his second visit this week Stevie managed 32 best being a good fish of 9 lb. Visiting angler Brian Mulholland struck into 30 mostly on nymph patterns while Durham's Paul Embleton kept up his good average with a return of 22 on CDC and diawl bach.

Two big fish were taken from the water this week, the best of which fell to visiting angler Mr R lake with a good rainbow of 12lb 2oz and Sunderland rod K Clark with a fin perfect 10lber.
The bait lake continues to entertain with rods averaging between 4 and 5 fish per visit.

A special mention must go to regular rod John "no fish" Bean who after casting out, put his rod down to get a sandwich and turned back in time to see his rod disappear out into the middle of the lake. After launching the boat and retrieving the rod, John found a very nice brown trout of about 6lb was the culprit. His long time friend and fishing partner Bernie Mckewon's laughter could be heard all over the fishery.

Report upto 9th May

On to the big fish now and Darlington's Mr S McBean returned a beauty estimated at 20lb plus and Staindrop's Lee Thompson took home a lovely rainbow of 11lb on black buzzer.

Back to Paul Embleton and today i had the pleasure of seeing a fish playing an angler instead of the other way round. Paul (as we all know is a dab hand with a fly rod) struck into a modest fish of around 2lb on the big East Lake. He then promptly tripped over his bag and took a nose dive into the lake, somehow managing to keep in touch with the fish and as he rose to his feet, he calmly scooped the fish into the net, despite all his laughter.

Report upto 25th April

On to the big fish now and Darlington's Mr S McBean returned a beauty estimated at 20lb plus and Staindrop's Lee Thompson took home a lovely rainbow of 11lb on black buzzer.

Despite freezing cold winds and cloudless skies there has still been some cracking action down at Witton Castle Lakes. Top of the opinion polls is Kevin Blackwood of Leadgate who hit in to a big rainbow of 14 1/2lbs(fly unknown). While Chopwell rod Ian Purvis had his string pulled by a beauty of 11 1/2lb on a black fritz. Crook's Brian Conway left the fishery a happy man with a nice 6lb fish in the bag that fell to his cats whisker.

Tony and Jenny Ward of Wearhead braved the North wind for their first outing of the season and managed a nice bag of 4lb,3 3/4lb and 2 1/2lb on the ever popular husband and wife ticket.

On to the one fish tickets (formerly the catch and release permits) and Durham's Paul Embleton showed what can be done with buzzers returning 24 on a memorable day.

Report upto 11th April

A beautiful spring week down at Witton Castle Lakes can mean only one thing. That's right folks, It's buzzer time as proved by Cockfields Ryan Mathews. Ryan is a regular rod at the lakes and his switch from lures to buzzers this week has given him returns of 15,14,12,5 and 14.Most impressive of all is his rod average for the year so far, hovering around the 16 mark per visit.

The Troutmasters final "fish off" took place on Saturday 10th April and was won by Crook rod Brian Conway with Consetts Sophie Coyle winning the junior section.
The best of the big fish fell to Evenwood's Mr G Dawson, whose lovely rainbow pulled the scales down to 12 3/4lb.Mr C Burnicle and J Goldsbrough also made it to double figures with 10 1/2lb and 10lb respectively.

Report upto 4th April

Heavy squally showers and cold winds have dominated this week at Witton Castle Lakes. Despite the poor conditions the lakes have continued to produce the goods with small nymph patterns fishing best. The fish are showing on the top but don't be fooled, best method has been a small hare's ear and pheasant tail nymph patterns fished slowly just under the surface.
a superb double fell to Mr S Hassell of Richmond. It tipped the scales at 18lb and was outwitted by Mr Hassles own creation fly nicknamed "the haemorrhoid"(a sort of damsel imitation with a gold body and black hair-wing).Newton Aycliffes Ron Hutton had a day to remember returning 27 fish and taking home a beauty of 10 1/2lb.Crook's Mr H Haughan also weighed in with a nice double of 10lb 2 oz. Durham rod Andy Viney enjoyed his visit returning 12 including a very nice rainbow of 9 1/2 lb.

Report upto 28th March

Spring is in the air at Witton castle Lakes with house martins returning to the lakes after their winter migration.
Durham Angler Mr S Campbell took the fish of the week award with a beauty rainbow of 11lb with his diawl bach. Pelton rod Mr H Vaughan just managed to make double figures with his 10lb rainbow and Andrew Viney from Consett almost made it to a double, just falling short but with a splendid fish of 9 1/2 lb.
Sport anglers are enjoying good bags with Cockfields Ryan Mathews continuing his fine form releasing 10 to a variety of flies.

Good Friday will see the opening of the Witton Castle Lakes Bait pond as the South Lake gives way to bait anglers. Anglers will be allowed to fish worm and sweet corn under a float for the 1st time at Witton and I’m sure there will be a few surprises as despite our best efforts there are still big rainbows in the lake. Pegs are limited and I urge you to book your place from Friday onward, call Tom or John on (01388)488691

Report upto 15th March

Through the week the fishing has continued to be tough at times at Witton Castle Lakes, with just a small window of opportunity as the afternoon sun heats things up. However, just like throwing a switch, everything changed on Friday. This week’s new stock of fish coupled with some warmer days really turned the fishing from tough to tremendous. Sparse damsel nymph patterns and small black fritz patterns are also producing the goods along with red blood worm patterns. Staindrop rod Lee Thompson had a field day returning 11 on a 4 hour ticket, the best being a brownie of around the 3lb mark. The quality fishing continued through Saturday with Meadowfield's Bernie McEwan losing count of fish he released by dinner time. Bishop Auckland junior member Ryan Mathews found his form again releasing 14 and Newton Aycliffe's Dean Appleby putting back 11 on his 4 hour outing.

The final of the Winter competition will take place on Sunday 21st March commencing at 10.00am gook luck to all the anglers participating.

Report upto 7th March

Crisp cold mornings followed by beautiful spring afternoons have re-awoken Witton Castle Lakes from its winter slumber. The fishing at times has been testing as the water temperature remains very cold however, there is usually that window of opportunity in the afternoon as things heat up a bit.
The star of the show this week was no doubt the 8lb overwintered brown trout that Mr M Connerton managed to fool with his small black fritz mini lure. This fine specimen really did put up a cracking battle and was truly fin perfect, a fine fish. Mr and Mrs Ward from Wearhead took advantage of the husband and wife ticket to bag a nice brace of 3lb each, While Newton Aycliffe rod Ron Hutton secured a nice rainbow in the 4lb range. Witton regular Alan Ross of Bishop Auckland bagged up in 3 hours and returned a lovely brown trout of 4lb.Mr Huey Martin of Chopwell left the fishery a happy man with a nice 4lb fish.
A very special mention now for Mr Norman Midgley of Leadgate who went through all last year without catching a brownie. He was getting so desperate to catch one that it became a bit of a running joke down at the lakes. Norman on his first visit of this season managed to catch not one but two brownies estimated at 2lb each. Well done at last Norman.
As you can see from this weeks report, the brown trout are featuring heavily. It is well worth changing your tactics a little just now to get some quality sport from these fine fighting fish. As the temperatures rise (that's optimism for you), these fish will become harder and harder to catch.
Tom and John

Report Weekending 7th February

The ice age is over!!! After nearly 5 weeks of the harshest winter weather, Witton Castle Lakes has come back with a bang. A heavy stock of fish was introduced to the lakes just before the icing over of all the lakes. Now that the ice has retreated, these fish are in a cracking condition and most of them have never seen a fly before, which promises some exciting days ahead.

Top of the pile was Mr J Ord of Bishop Auckland who caught and released 7 beauties ,including 8lb , 3lb and 3lb. Visiting angler Mr Bob Hollis had a lovely day on the Sedge Hog releasing 6 with the best going to 6lb.

The fish can be found on the top for a short period in the afternoon, but a small black buzzer dropped below the dry seems to be producing the more consistent results.
Remember at the current moment the lakes are open from 9.00am until 4.00pm on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Report for Weekending 31st January

The lakes are now open again after the ice and anglers are catching fish, husband and wife anglers Peter and Ann MacLean were successful with floating lines and bloodworm patterns. Also successful was John McGarrell who hooked and landed fish, again with floating line and bloodworm patterns. Sinking lines with lures and damsel Nymphs were also proving successful. Remember you can still go fishing on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Opening time 9.00am until 4.00pm.

The cold Northerly wind persists down at Witton Castle Lakes and this has been putting fish well down at times. When they are showing interest on the top the usual suspects have been in form, CDC shuttlecock, shipman’s and small dry hares ear all producing good catches. Durham rod Paul Embleton continues to enjoy his week off work, releasing 23 on small patterns (more on Paul later), fellow Durham angler D. Storey put back 21 mostly on CDC. Mr M. Appleby's bag of 15 deserved praise, with a small diawl bach doing the business. Stevie Freak also had some good returns of 14 and 26 with a buzzer under the bite indicator. Top of the lot though was Spennymoors Geoff Wharton returning 30.

This Saturday(17th July) Witton Castle Lakes will host the Help The Heroes Day,so if you've ever wondered about fishing and want to learn or if you fancy just popping in for a cuppa and see what the lakes are all about then feel free to come along and you can help support a great cause at the same time. There will be fun and games with prizes large and small to be won(including a holiday),and don't forget that 3 times world champion Scott Mackenzie will be issuing advise, tips and tuition.
Many Thanks

Report to 5th September

The lakes have really hit top form this week with the fish rising freely to dry fly and small nymph patterns fished just sub surface.
Hunwick regular Ray Anderson took the biggest fish of the week with a 12 3/4lber from the South lake that fell to a slowly fished Diawl Bach, while Haughton le Spring rod Jamie Craig went close with a 12lb rainbow on black buzzer. Arguably the best bag limit this week went to Newcastle angler Jimmy "Shipman" Gargett whose bag of fin perfect rainbows of 4 1/4 ,3 1/2 and 3lb measured up fine when you consider the 4lb brown trout and the further 4 fish that he returned on a claret shipmans buzzer.

Report to 1st August

This week has seen the West lake overtake the South lake, with better bags and bigger fish being taken.Plenty of excellent quality rainbows and blues in the 3-7lb range with damsel nymph and daddies accounting for most of the better returns.

Catch and release anglers have not been left behind with Leadgates Joe Myers returning a fine rainbow to the East lake that was estimated at 14lb and was tricked by his daddy pattern. Pontelands John Sharp returned another nice rainbow of 8lb on a foam beetle while Bishop's Alan Ross and Durhams P Robinson returned a 5lb blue and a 5lb brown trout respectively.
The bait lake still throws up surprises with P lister taking 8 fish and reports of an 8lb brown trout returned to the lake.

Report to 16th September

An up and down sort of week down at Witton Castle Lakes with some great sport when the wind is blowing and fish are attacking lures although some anglers have found it tough when the lakes are flat calm and look like glass. Wittons big brown trout have been showing up lately and another cracker was netted this week when a fish (estimated at 10-12lb) was returned to the South Lake after munching on a lucky anglers black zonker. Plenty of brownies in the 3-6lb range being caught mostly on lures.
Best of the rainbows this week was Darlingtons Mr A J Binn with a fine fish of 8lb in a bag of 9.
Apologies to Brad Richardson who was mentioned a few weeks back (mistakenly named as Brad Maddison) whose splendid effort in the Talent Pathfinder event was followed up by bagging the "top rod" award over the 2 legs against the North West region at Bigland Hall fishery in Cumbria. Brad managed 7 fish over the home and away matches. The local lads found it tricky on there travels but gave a very good account of themselves as they secured a narrow win.Well Done

Report to 11th September

September can often be the month when still water trout fishing can come into its own and the beginning of the month has been no exception down at Witton Castle Lakes. Trout have the ability to know that the winter is coming, they also know that to "make it through" they must spend September and October fattening up for the months ahead, Fish fry is on the menu and as a result lure patterns start to feature in the catch returns. Alan McPhail's bag of 19 was the best this week which included a good fish of 7lb on CDC patterns, Middlesboro's Andy Grabham wasn't far behind with 18 on various flies. Weardales Tony Ward kept to his small nymph tactics and recorded a very respectable 11. West Auckland rod Fred Walton managed a good bag of 12 but with a very good rainbow of 16lb on dries and nymph while Meadowfield's Bernie McKewon was smiling with his bag of 5 which included a cracking brown trout of 15lb and good rainbow of 7 1/2lb on zonker and cats whisker lures.
